Abstract

In this study, self-stratifying coatings has been reviewed. A self stratifying coating is a coating that applies in one layer onto the substrate, but stratifies into two continues layers with internal attachment during film formation. The science and knowledge of these coatings can be considered as a tool for formulating modern coatings with special applications. Film former composites based on incompatible polymer blends are a typical self-stratifying coating with excellent performance. The concept of self stratifying can be used in different solvent based, waterborne and powder coatings. This concept requires specific formulations and also typical circumstances in application and film formation steps.
Coating films based on incompatible polymer blends with a multilayer or micro –heterogeneous polymer/polymer composite, produced by one-coat application of a single coating composition, can show excellent properties such as adhesion strength, protective and mechanical properties in the bulk and scratch and mar resistance on the surface of the coating.
