Abstract

Sanandaj (or Sanneh) hand-woven rugs are the most beautiful and durable hand-woven rugs of the tribes and nomads of western Iran, which are strongly influenced by the ethnic characteristics and geographical climate of their weavers. In addition, the element of color, as one of the three visual elements (design, pattern, and color), has a special place among Kurdish weaving artists. Accordingly, the statistical population studied in this study is the four Qajar hand-woven rugs preserved in the Iranian Carpet Museum. This research is based on library studies, field observations and is written through a descriptive-analytical method, and it looks to find a suitable answer to this question: How are shades selected and combined in the color palette of Sannandaj rugs? This research aims to identify selected shades of color palettes using the Munsell color system and, the evaluation of color harmony patterns is based on the well-known Itten’s theory from both visual and psychological perspectives. The results show that warm shades were used more than cold shades in these rugs. Also, the dominant color contrasts in these rugs are of the type warm-cold, dark-light, and proportion.
