Assessing the Colorscape Conservation and Restoration Strategies for Narenjestan Ghavam Historical Passageway in Shiraz

Abstract

Color is a fundamental element of visual perception, essential to the identity and quality of urban spaces. In historical contexts, chromatic interventions require careful attention to both cultural and physical settings. This study examines the colorscape of the Narenjestan Ghavam Historical Passageway in Shiraz, situated near the Qajar-era Narenjestan Complex and Zinat al-Molk House. Owing to recent “alley-gallery” projects, the passage serves as a critical case study highlighting the tension between its historic chromatic palette and contemporary aesthetic additions. Employing a mixed-methods approach, the research combines field surveys and digital photography (Nikon D5500, 18–55 mm lens) with quantitative analysis, including color code extraction, zoning maps, and indices of color saturation and tone. Findings indicate that the historic façades are predominantly defined by authentic earthy and native tones, such as cream, beige, and brown, that harmonize intrinsically with local construction materials. In contrast, contemporary murals and interventions introduce a broad spectrum of saturated, contrasting hues, including blue, purple, pink, and red. This has led to a measured increase of more than 60% in chromatic diversity, resulting in significant visual disturbance and a weakening of the passage’s coherence and historical identity. The study concludes that conserving and restoring the colorscape of Narenjestan Ghavam Historical Passageway requires the restriction of incongruent interventions, reinforcement of authentic native architectural elements, and the development of urban color-planning guidelines to safeguard the site’s cultural and aesthetic integrity.
