Nowadays, the supplementary protection of concrete structures exposed to aggressive media is a must. To
achieve a durable concrete structure, the use of appropriate protective methods to prevent degradation and
erosion due to aggressive environmental conditions is necessary in addition to the proper formulation of
compounds. Application of protective coatings on the surface of concrete is one way to increase the
durability of concrete. Creation of a dense layer of coating on the concrete surface effectively prevents the
penetration of water, gas, and chemical destructive ions into concrete. This technique has a determining role
in reducing the damage to the concrete structures and increasing their longevity. In this paper, the
performance of different coating in protecting concrete structures against destructive agents attack has been
reviewed. The experimental results show that organic coatings such as epoxy, polyurethane and acrylic
provide better performance against penetration of chloride ion, sulfate, carbon dioxide and water compared
to inorganic coatings and sealers, such as sodium silicate and silane/siloxane.
