The present study provides an overview of recent developments and new approaches in the field of photocatalytic membranes (PMs) in photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) and their application in the treatment of dye-containing wastewater. In this way, the main advantages and limitations for practical and large-scale applications of these reactors are reviewed. Membrane separation processes are sometimes limited by some parameters, therefore, combining them with other methods such as photocatalysis can have a synergistic effect, overcome membrane fouling and improve energy efficiency. The classification of photocatalytic membrane reactors is mainly based on the location of the photocatalyst with respect to the location of the membranes. This classification is thoroughly reviewed and the main factors affecting the two types of photocatalytic membrane reactors are also mentioned and these parameters are discussed. On the other hand, a general and all-round approach to the advancement of research in the field of PMs and PMRs is presented by addressing selected case studies.
