Polydopamine (PDA), a bioinspired polymer derived from the adhesive proteins of mussels, has emerged in recent years as a key material in surface engineering and smart coating technologies. Owing to its abundant catechol and amine functional groups, PDA can form highly adhesive, stable, and biocompatible layers on a wide range of substrates. This review summarizes the various polymerization routes of dopamine, including solution-based, enzymatic, electrochemical, and hydrothermal methods, and analyzes the influence of parameters such as pH, temperature, reaction time, and substrate type on the structure and final properties of the coatings. The physicochemical characteristics of polydopamine such as adhesion, surface reactivity, mechanical stability, photothermal behavior, and biocompatibility are discussed in detail. A survey of recent studies demonstrates that PDA can serve as an effective platform for developing antibacterial and antibiofilm coatings, photocatalysts, and pollutant-removal systems. Furthermore, its ability to integrate with nanostructures and conductive polymers opens new perspectives for designing functional coatings.
