Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) is an advanced electrochemical technique widely studied for the formation of adherent conversion oxide layers on the surface of metals and alloys. Furthermore, the PEO process has been applied to metals such as aluminum, magnesium, zinc, niobium, zirconium, tantalum, and steel to develop pigmented coatings. The catalytic activity of these pigmented oxide layers can be significantly enhanced through methods such as doping and heterojunction formation, either in-situ or post-impregnation of the active components. This comprehensive review systematically discusses photocatalytic pigments derived from the PEO process for various applications, providing a reliable reference for researchers in this field. The structure of the paper is organized based on the type of metallic substrate used in the PEO process. Moreover, the role of process parameters in determining photocatalytic performance and pigment characteristics of the formed layers is analyzed, along with details on the effects of doping or heterojunction formation with nonmetals, transition metals, rare-earth elements, noble metals, nanocarbons, and other materials.
