Biofouling represents a major challenge, contributing to health risks and considerable economic burdens in marine infrastructure, medical applications, and water treatment systems. This situation underscores the urgent need for the development of innovative antifouling coatings. Numerous technologies have been introduced that utilize toxic biocides, ecologically-harmful antifouling coatings, and chlorine to mitigate biofouling through hydration barrier. Nevertheless, their use is accompanied by environmental and health risk. Polymeric antifouling coatings have surfaced as a viable solution, effectively maintaining performance while minimizing biofouling. Recent studies in polymeric antifouling coatings have incorporated environmentally safe, non-toxic nanomaterials with outstanding antimicrobial characteristics as fillers, which have demonstrated efficacy against various waterborne microorganisms and the development of bacterial biofilms. This article offers a review of nanotechnology-driven antifouling agents including metals, metal oxides, carbon, polymeric, and composite nanostructures. Additionally, it discusses the various mechanisms that underlie the inhibition of bacterial cell proliferation and biofilm formation by antifouling nanocomposite coatings. The article also addresses the obstacles related to the synthesis of antifouling nanomaterials, their practical constraints, and future prospects.
