The rapid expansion of the textile industry has led to the discharge of large volumes of wastewater containing synthetic dyes, posing severe environmental risks, including elevated COD and BOD levels. This study explores the synthesis of geopolymers as innovative, low-cost substrates for photocatalytic materials. Geopolymers are synthesized via the reaction of aluminosilicate precursors—such as metakaolin or industrial wastes (fly ash and slag)—with alkaline activators. Various synthesis methods for geopolymer-based photocatalysts—including slurry-phase and fixed-bed reactors, the preparation of intrinsically photocatalytic geopolymers, direct incorporation of photocatalytic agents, and alkaline activation, ion exchange, and impregnation techniques—are reviewed. Additionally, characterization methods for geopolymer photocatalysts, factors affecting their photocatalytic performance in dye degradation, the underlying degradation mechanisms, and relevant kinetic models are evaluated. Finally, the recyclability and stability of geopolymer photocatalysts are assessed. The findings of this review indicate that modified geopolymers can serve as efficient, stable, and reusable photocatalysts for treating dye-containing wastewater.
